CEDAR CITY, Utah — Southern Utah University Athletics has announced the hiring of Steven Lindquist as the new Head Coach of the Thunderbirds women's soccer program. Lindquist, who has served as the program's interim head coach over the past two months, steps into the role full-time after leading all aspects of the team's spring training and offseason recruiting efforts.
Lindquist brings continuity and proven leadership to the program, having been a key figure on the Southern Utah staff since 2021. Over the past several seasons, he has steadily risen through the ranks, from volunteer assistant coach to assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, and, most recently, to associate head coach. Lindquist has played an instrumental role in the program's recent success.
Interim Director of Athletics Tom Higbee Said
"Steven has been part of this program's growth every step of the way, and what's stood out most is the way he invests in our student-athletes as people, not just players. Over the past couple of months, he's embraced the responsibility of leading this program with energy, purpose, and a genuine care for the culture we're building here at Southern Utah. We're excited for him, his family, and the future of Thunderbirds soccer under his leadership."
Since stepping into the interim role, Lindquist has fully embraced the responsibilities of a head coach, organizing and implementing team training sessions, coordinating recruiting efforts for the upcoming season, and continuing to develop the Thunderbirds on and off the field.
During his tenure at Southern Utah, Lindquist has helped guide the program through one of its most successful stretches. In 2022, the Thunderbirds recorded a program-best five-match winning streak and finished 9-6-2 in their first season competing in the Western Athletic Conference. He has also played a critical role in player development, particularly among the defensive unit and goalkeepers. Under his guidance, Southern Utah set program records for most shutouts in a season (8) and individual shutouts (6).
As associate head coach, Lindquist oversaw many facets of the program alongside the head coach, including training implementation, recruiting coordination, video analysis, travel logistics, and budget management. His recruiting efforts have brought in high-level talent, including players with experience at the U17 U.S. National Team, U20 Mexican National Team, and multiple international programs.
Head Soccer Coach Steven Lindquist Said
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to take over the reins of the Thunderbirds soccer program. I look forward to continuing this program's commitment to developing strong, confident young women who excel athletically, academically, and personally. There is tremendous potential here, and I'm eager to bring energy, passion, and a fresh vision to the program. I am thankful to Tom Higbee, Marie Tuite, and the rest of the administration for their belief in me. My family and I are excited to continue to be members of the Southern Utah University and Cedar City community."
Prior to his time in Cedar City, Lindquist spent four years at Oakland University, where he contributed to the development of multiple All-Horizon League selections and helped elevate the program into a consistent postseason contender. He also brings head coaching experience at the collegiate, club, and high school levels, including stops at Washtenaw Community College, Michigan Premier Soccer Academy, and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy.
Lindquist earned his bachelor's degree in education from Valparaiso University and a master's degree in higher education leadership from Oakland University.
With Lindquist at the helm, the Thunderbirds look to build momentum and continue establishing themselves as a competitive force as they return to the Big Sky Conference.
