SEATTLE, Wash./FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Jan. 28 – The women's
distance team found great success at both the UW Invitational and NAU's
Mountain T Invitational this weekend, with school and personal records being
set in both venues.
Diana Medina-Mitchell led the way with a fifth-place finish
in the 5,000-meters on Friday. Her time of 16:30.07 ranks first in the Summit
League and sets a new top school record for SUU, improving her own previous
record by more than 55 seconds.
Medina-Mitchell also raced in the 3,000-meters, finishing
13th with a time of 9:31.93. This time also ranks first in the conference and
improves her second-place school record.
“When you consider that Diana is competing in two different
events, these results are really incredible,” head coach Eric Houle said. “The
way this team and the men's team have competed has been out of control.”
Kayla Kovar represented the throwers in Seattle, finishing
first in the shot put with a mark of 49-5.
The distance team in Flagstaff also raced its way into the
top of the conference, led by Danielle West in the mile. West finished first in
4:59.81, ranking third in the Summit League and sixth in Southern Utah's
records. Ashley Gray followed close behind, finishing second with a time of
5:03.36 and ranks fifth in the conference.
Kaylee Coates led the women in the 800-meter, ranking eighth
in the conference with a fourth-place finish and time of 2:19.76.
Chelsea Morley-Atkinson led the jumpers with a third-place mark
of 5-3 in the high jump, placing her ninth in the conference, while Jasmine
Paicely-Mullins sprinted to a fifth-place time of 8.74 in the 60-meter hurdles.
Paicely-Mullins' time ranks second in the Summit League and fourth in SUU's
records.
The women will be back to compete next weekend when the team
is divided between the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.; the NAU Open in
Flagstaff, Ariz.; and the Mountain States Games in Pocatello, Idaho on Feb.
3-4.
The Flagstaff times have been adjusted for altitude.
