SUU Gymnastics Finishes Fourth in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. - Feb. 11 - Southern Utah University gymnastics had to count falls on bars, beam and floor en route to a fourth-place finish at the 2012 Masters Classic at the University of Nebraska on Saturday night. The Thunderbirds finished behind the Cornhuskers (196.550), the University of MIchigan (195.825) and the University of Washington (194.150).

SUU began the night on bars and started strong with matching 9.700's from seniors Lauren Jeffrey and Brooke Cersosimo on the first two routines. Freshmen Rochelle Bernier and Jamie Armijo followed and encountered rough patches during their routines, scoring a 9.075 and 9.350, respectively. The lineup wrapped up with a 9.625 from Ana Jaworski and a team-best 9.725 from Caitlin Kennedy.

Cerosimo led the Thunderbirds on beam, as the team moved to the apparatus during its second rotation, scoring a season-high 9.700. She was followed by Kennedy's 9.650, Armijo's 9.600 and Jaworski's 9.500. Falls from Brittney Jensen and Anna Schumacher resulted in the Thunderbirds having to count one of the routines and leaving the team with a 47.250.

Southern Utah went 4-for-4 on the floor exercise to open the third rotation, but suffered two more falls during the final two routines, scoring a 47.900. Jensen bounced back from her falls on beam to score a team-best 9.750 on the event and was followed closely by Jaworski with a 9.725. Bernier's 9.675, Kennedy's 9.650 and Carly Sigler's collegiate debut on floor of 9.100 rounded out the team score.

The Thunderbirds looked like a different team during the final rotation as SUU logged a 48.650 on vault, scoring four routines of at least a 9.700 or higher. Bernier was tops on the team with a 9.800 and she was followed by a 9.775 from Jensen, a 9.750 from Armijo and a 9.700 from Kennedy. Jaworski's 9.625 made up the final mark that counted towards the team score.

Kennedy finished with a 38.725 in her first collegiate appearance in the all-around, marking the third highest all-around total by a Thunderbird gymnast this year. Jaworski and Armijo followed with career-bests of 38.475 and 37.700.

Southern Utah will be without a meet next weekend, allowing the team to recover from injuries as the Thunderbirds' top four all-arounders have been missing in lineups for most of the season. Following the byes, SUU will travel to Provo to face Brigham Young University and Utah State on Saturday, February 25.
