Day two

FARGO, N.D. - Southern Utah University women's track & field wrapped up their final Summit League outdoor track and field championships on Saturday, going out with a bronze medal finish. The Thunderbirds finished behind North Dakota State (193) and South Dakota (164), but concluded the final day of competition with two more individual titles to bring that total to five for the three day weekend.

Kayla Kovar picked up her third individual title of the championship, taking the women's discus with a toss of 164 feet 10 inches. Kovar swept each of the throwing events during the championships with the exception of the javelin, earning the sophomore Women's Field MVP honors.

Diana Medina-Mitchell also picked up her second individual title of the weekend with a first-place finish in the women's 5,000-meters, crossing the finish line in 16:52.05. She was joined in the top five by a pair of teammates as Jamie Smith finished just behind her in second place with a time of 17:01.28 and Sylvia Bedford finished fifth with a time of 17:18.49.

The Thunderbird women also recorded four scoring finishes in the 1,500-meters with Danielle West leading the way with a third-place finish of 4:29.83. Smith was right at her heels in fourth place with a time of 4:30.03 and Kaylee Coates (4:32.27) and Medina-Mitchell (4:32.58) wrapped up the scoring finishes in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Coates later returned in the women's 800-meters and finished fifth with a time of 2:21.66.

Jasmine Mullins was the final highlight for the Thunderbirds on the day with a second-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 14.01.

Southern Utah will move to the Big Sky Conference next season, but will now turn its attention to the NCAA West Regionals hosted by the University of Texas, May 25-26.
