Thunderbirds Fall to Miami (OH), 76-63

OXFORD, Ohio – The SUU men's basketball team (0-2) again played very well in the first half of a game but couldn't continue that success in the second half as they lose to Miami (OH), 76-63.

The Thunderbirds were up 30-29 as the first half was winding down when Miami's Will Sullivan hit one of his six three-pointers on the day to give the RedHawks a 32-30 lead at the half.

The RedHawks would use that momentum to open the second half on a 15-5 run, pushing the score to 47-35 and a 12-point lead for Miami. SUU fought back and came as close as 5-points at 52-47 before Miami used another big run to put some distance between them and the Thunderbirds. SUU would close the game with a mini run of their own, outscoring Miami 12-6 in the closing minutes to make the final score 76-63.

Trey Kennedy had a great night for the Thunderbirds as he led SUU with 17 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and 5-8 from the free throw line. A.J. Hess followed his performance against Kansas State with a 14-point performance against Miami on 5-10 shooting from the field including 2-5 from deep. Freshman Tyler Rawson was again cleaning up the boards for SUU, he finished with a team high 6 rebounds. He also added four points on 2-3 shooting. Sophomore guard Juwan Major had his breakout game of the year, scoring 12 points on 4-6 shooting and 4-4 from the charity stripe. He also led the team with two assists and zero turnovers.

The Thunderbirds shot well from the field, making 50 percent of their shots but were only able to go 3-12 from downtown. SUU won the turnover battle but had only seven assists compared to Miami's 14.

Looking ahead for the Thunderbirds they will open their 2014 home campaign with an in-state battle against Utah Valley. That game will be played on Saturday Nov. 22, at 7:00 p.m.
