Season High on Beam Seals Victory for SUU Gymnastics

PROVO, Utah - Southern Utah University gymnastics carried the narrowest of margins into the final rotation in Provo on Friday night as only .050 separated the two teams, but sealed the 195.500-195.375 victory over BYU with a season-high on beam. The mark is the fifth straight 195-plus team score for SUU this season and avenges an earlier loss to the Cougars to begin the year.

"We still had some miscues in this meet, but our beam lineup was strong and we finished well," head coach Scott Bauman said. "I'm proud of how these girls keep fighting meet in and meet out."

Southern Utah opened on bars where the team scored its second straight 49-plus team score with a 49.025 on the event. The final three competitors led the way for the T-Birds as Jamie Armijo scored a 9.850 and was followed by 9.825's from Alyssa Click and Memory Shettles. Danielle Ramirez began the rotation with a 9.750 and was followed by Rochelle Bernier with a 9.775 to round out the team score.

BYU began its meet on vault, scoring a 48.725 behind only five in the rotation.

The Thunderbirds' three-tenths lead after the first rotation was reduced to just half a tenth after the second as SUU scored a 48.625 on vault to BYU's 48.875 on bars. Southern Utah's vault lineup had a scary moment when the third competitor, Ramirez, landed very short on her vault after slipping on the horse. The fall didn't count towards the team score as Shettles, Armijo and Stacie Webb led the team with 9.75's and were followed by a 9.700 from Virginia Brownsell and a 9.675 from Bernier.

Neither team gave an inch in the third rotation with both squads finishing with a 48.850 on floor for SUU and on beam for BYU. Natalie Trejo and Tyly Bozzuto were tops for the Thunderbirds on the event with matching 9.825's, marking a new career high for Bozzuto. A 9.775 from Brittney Jensen, 9.725 from Carly Sigler and a 9.700 from Ana Jaworski also counted towards Southern Utah's total on the event.

The T-Birds opened strong in the final rotation as Trejo, Webb, Jaworski and Shettles kicked off SUU's beam lineup with a 9.750, a career-best 9.850, a 9.825 and a career-best 9.900, respectively. The quartet set up Click, a senior, for a big score, but a miscue on a series led to a slightly lower 9.675. The scores gave Southern Utah a season-high 49.000 on the event and Shettles her third individual beam title of the season. The total also led to the Thunderbirds' final team tally of 195.500.

BYU finished the night with a 48.925 on floor en route to its team total of 195.375. The Cougars' Makenzie Johnson picked up the all-around title with a 39.150.

The two teams will be right back at it on Monday night when the venue shifts to Cedar City and the Centrum Arena. That meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. with live stat and live video links available online at www.suutbirds.com.
