SUU Gymnastics Finishes Season Strong at Minneapolis Regional

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Southern Utah University gymnastics finished its season and night strong, scoring a 49.175 on vault in its final rotation to record a 195.150, fifth-place finish at the Minneapolis Regional on Saturday night. The Thunderbirds' vault score was the fourth-highest in school history as SUU punctuated its season.

SUU opened the competition on bars, scoring a 48.650 with freshman Tyly Bozzuto leading the way with a career-high 9.800. She was followed by a pair of 9.750's from fellow freshmen Memory Shettles and Danielle Ramirez. Rochelle Bernier and Alyssa Click rounded out the team score with a 9.725 and 9.625, respectively.

The Thunderbirds then moved to beam and scored a 48.875 behind four 9.8's from Natalie Trejo, Ana Jaworski, Bozzuto and Click. A final 9.675 from Shettles rounded out the team score of 48.875 for Southern Utah.

SUU had its struggles in the third rotation on floor, suffering a fall and stepping out of bounds twice en route to a 48.450, its lowest team score of the competition. The Thunderbirds were led on the event by Shettles and Brittney Jensen with matching 9.800's and they were followed by Bozzuto with a 9.700. Jaworski and Trejo each contributed a 9.650 and 9.500, respectively, towards the team score.

All five scoring gymnasts in Southern Utah's final rotation on vault recorded a 9.800 or higher as Shettles and Jensen laid the ground work with matching 9.800's. Ramirez continued to build with a 9.825 and Stacie Webb and Virginia Brownsell capped the scoring with a pair of career-high 9.875's. The total led to the 49.175 and the second time this season that the Thunderbirds assaulted the top-five records on vault, scoring a fifth-best 49.125 at Denver earlier in the year.

Bozzuto and Shettles finished the night with 39.025's in the all-around, marking the third consecutive meet that Bozzuto has scored above the 39-point threshold in the all-around this season.

The University of Oklahoma and the University of Illinois finished first and second at the meet with a 197.725 and 196.600 to qualify as teams to the NCAA National Championships. Minnesota and California finished third and fourth, scoring a 196.350 and 195.700, respectively and San Jose State finished sixth with a 193.950.
