SUU Women?s Golf at Weber State on Friday

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women's golf will begin the fall portion of its schedule when the Thunderbirds play at the Weber State Invitational on Friday at the Davis Park Golf Course in Kaysville, Utah.

SUU will be represented by returners Monica Jung, Taylor Viquelia, Nicole Thomas and Rynae Baca and newcomer Miranda Reyes. Sophomore Ashley Stubbs and newcomer Nicole Begay are slated to compete as individuals.

The Course

The Coach

Richard Church (Utah '89) is in his 15th season as head golf coach and his 20th on the staff at Southern Utah. Prior to taking over the program from former Coach John Evans, Church spent four seasons as the Thunderbirds' assistant coach. During his tenure on the SUU staff, Church has coached five academic all-Americans, one Mid-Continent Conference medalist, two Mid-Con runner-ups and the University's only two NCAA post-season competitors in golf. He is the only women's golf coach in SUU history.

Last Time at Weber State

KAYSVILLE, Utah - Aug. 30, 2013 – Freshman Taylor Viquelia shot 3-over par 74 to lead Southern Utah as the Thunderbirds finished third at Weber State's Wildcat Invitational on Friday.

Viquelia finished tied for fifth four shots off the pace of Utah Valley's Brooke Bliss, who led the Wolverines to a two-shot team win over host Weber State. Utah Valley finished at 296, with Weber State checking in at 298 and SUU at 305. Idaho State was well off the pace in fourth place at 326.

Junior Monica Jung was second among Thunderbirds in eighth place at 5-over par 76 over the par 71, 6,149-yard Davis Park Golf Club course, while Nicole Thomas finished in a tie for 12th at 77 and Rynae Baca was 16th at 78. Freshman Melanie Stark rounded out the Thunderbirds' scoring at 7-over 79 while SUU junior Shantell Spackman and freshman Carly Parsons, playing as individuals, finished 24th at 81 and 26th at 84, respectively.
