Women's Golf Records Best Big Sky Finish at Palm Desert

PALM DESERT, Calif. - Southern Utah University women's golf tied Northern Arizona for fifth place at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate as the two teams led Big Sky teams at the tournament. The Thunderbirds were led by a 13th-place finish by Monica Jung as the senior shot a 14-over 230.

SUU opened in second place at the tournament after shooting a 309 in the first round, but slipped to fifth after carding a 316 and 311 during the final two. The finish left the Thunderbirds at 72-over 936 as San Jose State led start-to-finish and won the tournament with a 29-over 893. New Mexico State (917), College of Charleston (919) and UC Riverside (920) rounded out the top four.

Jung was second among Big Sky finishers as Sacramento State's Rockelle Sande tied for fourth after coming back to the clubhouse with a 9-over 225. As a team, Sacramento State finished just ahead of Montana State in 13th as the teams shot an 89-over 953 and 97-over 961, respectively.

Rynae Baca and Taylor Viquelia came in second and third for SUU after recording a 28th- and 36th-place result. Baca finished with a 19-over 235 as Viquelia finished with a 21-over 237, including a season-best round of 76 to open the tournament.

Nicole Thomas (45th) and Miranda Reyes (73rd) rounded out the Thunderbirds' team score with a 23-over 239 and 31-over 247, respectively. Reyes struggled in the opening round, shooting an 18-over 90, but bounced back the final two and carded a 79 and 78.

Ashley Stubbs, playing as an individual, wrapped up her tournament with a 66-over 282. The freshman trimmed 18 shots from a rocky opening 105 and shot a third round 87.

Southern Utah will conclude its fall season at the Cal Poly Firestone Grill at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course on Oct. 25-26.
