OGDEN, Utah – The Thunderbirds couldn't manage to get their offensive game rolling in their Wildcat matchup, resulting in their second Big Sky loss. Southern Utah now holds a 3-2 conference record.
Weber State took a 10-point run to open the game and never looked back as they held the Thunderbirds to just 12 points in the first half, guiding Weber to its first Big Sky win, 60-39.
Freshman Sydnee Taylor, off the bench, led the Thunderbirds with nine points as Funk and Gates each added six. Southern Utah tacked on four blocks and fives steals with Jackson and Funk each totaling three assists.
The Wildcats opened the rivalry matchup 10-0 before a three-pointer from Marquelle Funk put Southern Utah on the board. Emma Weinreich knocked in a layup to cut the Wildcat's lead to five. Weber State extended its lead to 14 before a three-point play from Taylor put the Thunderbirds in double digits, trailing 23-12.
Weber State rounded out the first half with a six-point scoring spree to enter halftime with a 31-12 lead. Southern Utah's bench put up seven of SUU's 12 points in the first half as Taylor led with five. The Wildcats shot 34.4% from the field as Southern Utah shot 26.3%.
Ashleigh Munns broke WSU's six-point run to open the second half with a three-pointer before a trey from Funk and a layup from Taylor placed the Thunderbirds within 20.
The Thunderbirds took a 7-0 run with layups from Desiree Jackson and Brenna Gates and a three-pointer from Madison Wright before Taylor finished a layup to cut the Wildcat's lead to 13 with 6:27 to play. Southern Utah couldn't develop its offense, leaving the Wildcats with a 60-39 win.
Southern Utah returns home to host Montana State and Montana on Jan. 22 and Jan. 24, respectively.
