CEDAR CITY, Utah - The SUU gymnastics team head to Denver this weekend for the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championships as the third seed behind Boise State and Denver University.
After winning a big meet Friday evening on senior night in the Centrum Arena Senior Jamie Armijo states that the Thunderbirds are ready to compete this weekend. “We feel really strong and we know that we have to hit our routines. We know we can compete against any team in the country now and that builds our confidence going into conference.”
Head coach Scott Bauman knows that the Thunderbirds have to bring their best in order to walk out of the Magness Arena in Denver victorious. “We have to bring our A-game. This conference is a dog fight. Boise State's Bars are top-notch and Denver's floor and vault team are absolutely incredible, but we're all right in this one and it's going to be fun to see the girls rise to the occasion.”
Following Friday evening's competition the Thunderbirds are now numerically locked into the NCAA Regional championships on April 3-4. Senior Ana Jaworski knows that the goal for the team is to succeed over the next two meets. “Our gymnastics is great and we believe we can win the MRGC and do great at Regionals. Getting the experience under our belt of beating great teams really helps our confidence.”
Redshirt Sophomore Stacie Webb leads the Thunderbirds with three top-10 rankings on individual events in the conference. The balance beam continues to be Webb's strongest event statistically where she sits in second in the conference with a 9.855 regional qualifying score. Senior Jamie Armijo sits in third in the conference on the uneven bars with a 9.880 RQS.
Competition begins at 6:07 p.m. MTS. Live scoring and video can be accessed through suutbirds.com.
