CEDAR CITY, Utah – May 13 – Southern Utah University track and field prepares to compete at the Big Sky Conference Championships held in Cheney Washington. A total of twelve teams and 520 athletes will be competing in the championships.
“We are going into these championships to perform at our very best,” head coach, Eric Houle, said. “We are in one of the top ten conferences in the country, so this sets the stage for our athletes to run great performances.”
The distance races are headed by a few T-Birds. Mike Tate is scheduled to compete in the 1,500-meter and 5k. Tate is currently ranked second in the conference in the 1,500. Nate Jewkes will compete in the 10,000-meter where he sits third in the conference. Hayden Hawks will compete in the 5,000-meter with a conference ranking of fourth. On the women's side, Ashley Hawks sits in the top rankings in the conference in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter. She is scheduled to compete in both events ranking fifth in the 1,500 and third in the 5k.
Jamila Pullum and Haley Harris will double in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dash. Harris is ranked tenth in the conference in the 400-meter. Freshman, Justin Lewis and Zach Morris, will also double this weekend in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash where Lewis is currently ranked 8th in the conference in the 200-meter. Mayra Franco sits at a ninth place ranking in the women's 100-meter dash where she will try to improve that mark this weekend.
Kayla Kovar and Jennika Wright will represent the women in the throws at the championships. Kovar, despite only having competed at one meet this season, comes in with a fourth place ranking in the hammer throw. Wright will compete in the shot put and discus throw where she comes in with a fifth place conference ranking for the shot put.
The meet will be hosted by Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash. It will begin on Wednesday starting at 10:30 am with the men's decathlon. The multi-events will conclude Thursday. The regular portionof the meet will start on Friday with the men's hammer throw at 10 am. Running events will begin at 2:10. The meet will conclude on Saturday starting at 10 am.
