POCATELLO, Idaho – The 2015 SUU softball team's season would come to an end Friday as the Thunderbirds were eliminated from tournament play at the Big Sky Championships. Today's loss was at the hands of the Hornets of Sacramento State.
An SUU error in the top of the first led to the first score of the game by the Hornets. CSUS would load the bases and score two more in the inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Kylee Wolf continued her dominance in the tournament with an infield single to start the inning for the Thunderbirds. She wouldn't get past first base however as the next three batters went down in order.
Two more hits and a double down the left field line scored two more for CSUS in the top of the second and they would take a commanding 5-0 lead. For SUU in the bottom half of the inning, the Thunderbirds were able to get the first two batters on after a walk and single to left center but two strikeouts and a groundout and the score remained, 5-0 CSUS.
Jordan Theurer came in to pitch in the third inning for SUU and needed just four pitches to get three outs. Sacramento State's pitcher would all but match that production as the third inning came and went very quickly.
After a quick first out in the top of the fourth, Martin hit a home run to make it 6-0 before a walk, an error, and a single would score two more to activate the run rule at 8-0. The Thunderbirds went 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the fourth and prolonging their season meant they would need to hold the Hornets in the top of the fifth and score in the bottom.
SUU did it's job in the top half of the inning but couldn't push across a run in the bottom half as the Hornets would take this one, 8-0. SUU mustered just three hits in the loss with Wolf, Kelli Hales and Tanisha Anderson recorded those hits.
The Thunderbirds end the season with a 20-30 record and went 11-10 in conference play.
