Soccer Drops Opener to North Texas

Box Score

Las Vegas, Nev. - In the season opener of the 2015 season, the SUU women's soccer team played North Texas in a neutral site game. The Thunderbirds would eventually fall to the Mean Green, 2-1. Freshman Paige Robins notches SUU's only goal of the match.

"We have been saying the last two games that we are far from perfect and have things to work on and today's game exposed those weaknesses unfortunately," Head Coach Becky Hogan said. "I thought our team played exceptionally well in spurts but our overall effort was not sustained for long enough periods of time to really make the impact we needed to win."

The Mean Green started the scoring in the first half with a goal by Olivia Bagby in the 34th minute. North Texas went into the half with that 1-0 lead but SUU would respond with a goal just eight minutes into the second half. Robins scored the first goal of her career in the 53rd minute on a penalty kick, tying the score at 1-1.

North Texas needed just 2:30 to take the lead again and would hang on to that 2-1 lead to win the match.

"As I told the players, I'd much rather drop a game in August and learn a lot about our team and what we need to improve than to lose a single conference game.  Not that I'm endorsing losing, but all things considered preseason is still a time to learn," Coach Hogan stated.

SUU will play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday at 11:30 MST to finish play in the UNLV tournament.
