Thunderbird Gymnastics Set To Take On Aggies In Logan

Cedar City, Utah - With three weeks of competition in the books, the No. 24 Thunderbird gymnastics team will be in action on the road this Friday in Logan to take on the Utah State Aggies for the second time in as many weeks.

After seeing his team compete once on the road and twice in front of a Centrum Arena Crowd, SUU head coach Scott Bauman said he's liked what the team has shown thus far and is excited to see what they can do moving forward.

“I've learned that they're very tough, they're a very scrappy team,” he said. “We still have a lot of work to do throughout the rest of the year, but I can see the progress every day in these guys so I'm not worried about anybody, I think we're right where we need to be, but we've just got to stop counting major errors. We know the little ones will be there, but we've got to stop counting the big ones, the falls.”

After a pair of home meets in front of pretty good crowds the Thunderbirds will be back in a road environment on Friday, which is something T-Bird Madyson Blake said the team doesn't mind too much because of the support they get from each other.

“I think that our team has a lot of energy and that we boost each other up with that energy,” she said. “So whether we're home or away we know we've got each others back and that we're able to compete at the same level.”

Thunderbird Tyly Bozzuto said that when she's on the road she pays no mind to who is in the stands, she's just focused on her routine.

“I don't let it get to me really,” she said. “When I'm away I don't pay attention to the crowds or any of that, I just focus in on the gymnastics and when I'm at home I know the people in the stands so it's like I'm doing it for them, whereas away I'm doing it for my team mainly.”

In the most recent rankings the Thunderbirds found themselves in a tie for the 24th spot in the nation, as they have the same average score as Eastern Michigan, a 194.992.

The Thunderbirds are the second highest ranked team in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference, only behind No. 10 Boise State.

For the second straight Friday night the T-Birds and Aggies will be in the same gym. Last Friday the T-Birds topped USU, scoring a 195.275 while the Aggies scored a 194.900.

Last time out the T-Bird had a big performance by Stacie Webb, who was either outright event champion or tied for that title on all three events she performed on.

Stacie Webb currently ranks in the top-25 nationally for average beam score, receiving a 9.842 on average.

The Aggies were ranked 31st in the most recent NCAA standings, with a 194.458 average to this point of the season. The score they posted inside the Centrum Arena was the highest to this point for USU.

After traveling to Logan this weekend, the Thunderbirds will be home for three straight meets before spending the remainder of the season on the road.

Friday's meet from the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum is set for 7 p.m.
