Cedar City, Utah - The Thunderbird track and field teams were back at competition this weekend, competing across the Western United States as the indoor season rolls along.
Some of the team found themselves at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington, and the other members of the team traveled to the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the rest of the squad participating at the NAU Invitational in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Things started off right for the Thunderbirds on Friday night in Seattle, as SUU's Hayden Hawks hit a new personal record in the indoor 5K with a time of 13:53.96. That finish puts him in the second spot all time at SUU in the event, and he is currently close to being able to qualify for Nationals.
On Friday in Albuquerque, the Thunderbirds had a big performance from Jayson Kovar, who took fourth place in the weight throw in a field that was stacked with talent.
In the 60-meter dash, Ian Mack hit a Big Sky Conference automatic qualifying time.
On Saturday, Justin Lewis ran a 48.55 in the 400-meter dash, a time good enough to qualify him for the Big Sky Indoor Championships.
Both the men's and women's 4X4 teams had big races as well, as both squads set personal records.
On the women's side, Haley Harris had a season best in the 400-meter dash with a 57.66.
On the distance side, George Espino won the second heat of the 800-meters in Washington, which was a new indoor personal record for him and will send him to the Big Sky Conference Championships.
The T-Birds have one event on their calendar for next weekend, as the NAU Tune-Up is scheduled for February 19th.
