Thunderbirds Continue Play in Gaucho Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Thunderbird softball team continued play at the Gaucho Classic today, finishing the day with three losses. The Thunderbirds started the day with a game against South Carolina, before playing Georgia Tech, then wrapping up a game against the Yellowjackets that went unfinished yesterday.

SUU head coach Tom Gray said the team learned a lot today that they can use moving forward.

“I thought we played hard and tried to compete all day long,” he said. “However, we had a couple of lapses defensively. If it is going to come down to this we need to make our own breaks by clutching up and getting the big hit or defensive play.”

Georgia Tech 5, SUU 1

Yesterday's game between SUU and Georgia Tech was suspended due to darkness with the score knotted up at 1-1, but the Yellowjackets put up all the of runs on Saturday, ending the game with a 5-1 victory.

Neither team scored in the fifth inning, and SUU wasn't able to put anything up in the sixth inning either, but that's when Georgia Tech did their damage.

The Yellowjackets put four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead, and the Thunderbirds weren't able to respond in the top of the seventh, resulting in a loss.

South Carolina 6, SUU 5

In the opening game of Saturday, the Thunderbirds played a much closer contest with South Carolina than they did on Friday, but still fell to the Gamecocks 6-5.

The Thunderbirds were trailing 5-3 going into the sixth inning, but were able to put up two runs to put the pressure on South Carolina going into the final inning.

The teams were tied going into the seventh inning, and the Thunderbirds weren't able to score in the top of the frame, leaving the door open for South Carolina.

The Gamecocks took advantage, scoring with one out and two runners still on base to take the victory.

SUU's Cheyenne Cudahy pitched the majority of the game, allowing only one run on four hits.

The Thunderbirds finished the game with nine hits in 28 at-bats.

Georgia Tech 2, SUU 0

The Yellowjacks completed the sweep of SUU on Saturday with a 2-0 victory. Georgia Tech scored in the second and the fifth inning, and that was all they needed to top the T-Birds.

The Thunderbirds only finished with two hits on the game.

Jordan Theurer played the entirety of the game in the circle for the Thunderbirds, allowing two runs on seven hits.

The Thunderbirds will wrap up play at the Gaucho Classic in a game against the host team, UC Santa Barbara. That game is set to begin at 12:15 on Sunday.
