Big Second Quarter Propels Vandals Past T-Birds

Box Score

Moscow, Idaho - The Thunderbird women's basketball team fell on the road Thursday night to the Idaho Vandals 93-48.

The Thunderbirds got out to a solid start in the first quarter, and held the lead for the majority of the opening 10 minute period, with a 15-14 lead after one.

“We played great in the first quarter defensively,” SUU head coach Chris Boettcher said. “We were able to stick with them and force them to take some tough shots over our defense so that was really good, and we got the ball inside and Jess (Richardson) and Darri (Frandsen) both had good opportunities to get touches on the inside and that really worked well for us.”

Darri Frandsen had a big hand in the early lead the T-Birds accumulated, as she had seven points after the first quarter.

There was a massive change in the tides during the second quarter, as the Vandals went on a 22-4 run in the second period and took command of the contest, and had a 47-26 lead at the half.

“Early in the second quarter they came out and hit three threes in a row, and that's the kind of team they are,” Boettcher said.

In total, the Vandals hit seven three-pointers in the second quarter.

The Vandals continued to extend their lead in the second half, outscoring the T-Birds 27-11 in the third quarter and 19-11 in the fourth quarter, en route to a 93-48 victory.

Frandsen led the way for the Thunderbirds offensively and on the glass, as she scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Boettcher said about Frandsen, “One of the reasons she's becoming a fan favorite and a big part of this team is her consistency in working. She doesn't tend to let the last play linger in her mind, whether it's a turnover, missed rebound or foul. Some of our other players get down after something happens, and she keeps playing no matter what. It makes me really proud to see her be rewarded for her hard work and effort in that regard.”

Fellow forward Jessica Richardson was the Thunderbird's second leading scorer with eight.

The Vandals used a barrage of three-point shooting (14-of-28) and a plethora of points from their bench (56) to get the job done and walk away with a victory.

Taylor Pierce led the way in the scoring category for the Vandals with 17 points, followed by Christina Salvatore with 15 and Mikayla Ferenz with 14.

The Lady T-Birds will be back on the court Saturday night to take on the Eagles of Eastern Washington in Cheney, Washington. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
