Cedar City, Utah - The No. 24 Thunderbirds of SUU scored a 195.700 on Friday night inside the Centrum Arena. The team on the opposite side, the No. 9 Boise State Broncos, were able to outscore the T-Birds with a 196.250.
SUU head coach Scott Bauman said the team needs to continue to work on putting all four rotations together, but was still impressed with a lot of what he saw.
“We're still struggling putting an entire meet together, and I know we've been saying this and we're starting to sound like a broken record now,” he said. “We need to do something about this and we need to fix this problem.”
SUU's rotation on beam had it's ups and downs, and turned the tides of the meet. On the plus side, Danielle Ramirez and Stacie Webb both scored a 9.900 on the event, which was a career-high for Ramirez. And on the flip side, the Thunderbirds had a pair of falls and ended up having to count one of them.
“The four that hit were magnificent,” Bauman said. “They were so good.”
On vault, the Thunderbirds were led by Virginia Brownsell and Webb, who both scored 9.850s and were co-event champions. Mary Frances Bir and Mackenzie Bennion both scored 9.825s on the event for the Broncos, which put them in a tie for third.
Kirsten Yee, the school record holder, tied for the top spot on the bars with a 9.875, tied with BSU's Krystine Jacobsen. SUU's Sydney Townsend and Caitlyn Kessel both put 9.825s on the board for the T-Birds on the bars as well. For Townsend, that marked a new personal best.
Webb and Brownsell, the same duo that led the team on vault, also led the team on floor both scoring a 9.875 on Friday. The Bronco's Maddie Krentz had the top score of the night, notching a 9.925.
The Thunderbirds had a fantastic score of the floor as a team, scoring an event high of 49.225.
In all-around scoring, BSU's Shani Remme had the top mark with a 39.325, followed by Ramirez with a 39.100. Despite the solid score, Ramirez said there is a lot of room for her to improve moving forward when she was asked if it felt like the best performance of the season.
This was the first of three meets the Thunderbirds will have at home right in a row. On deck for the Thunderbirds is a matchup with MRGC opponent Brigham Young University, in what will be a tri-meet with sacramento State also making the trip to Cedar City.
Webb said by the time the three meets in the Centrum are complete, they hope they've shown everything they're capable of.
“We're hoping to just go out and do what we know we can do, which is hit every event six for six” she said. “We haven't done that yet and we really want to do that.”
Bauman echoed Webb's words, saying “that's what our goal is.”
That meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at tbirdtickets.com or at the Centrum Ticket Office.
