T-Birds Continue Setting Quality Marks at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Thunderbird track and field teams were in action on Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, where more athletes were able to punch their ticket to the Big Sky Outdoor Championships and set new personal bests.

In the women's 100-meter hurdles, SUU had three of the top five finishers with Megan Bedwell (14.67) taking second, Carly Dalton (14.99) taking third and China Simmons (15.04) taking fifth.

In the men's 1,500-meter run the Thunderbirds were well represented with five SUU athletes finishing in the top 13 in the race and Mike Tate running unattached was in that grouping as well. George Espino finished third in the race with a 3:49.34 to lead the way, which set a new personal record.

Justin Lewis continued his stellar start to the outdoor season, finishing the 100-meter dash in 10.74. That time is good enough to qualify for the Big Sky and was a new personal best for the sprinter. Lewis also hit a 21.53 in the 200-meter run, another time good enough to qualify for the BSC Championships.

Inoa Wahinehookae also set a Big Sky qualifying time in the 400-meter dash, running a 48.64.

The women's javelin throw was headlined for SUU by Lacey Hochhalter, who scored a 39.69 which vaulted her into the top 10 of the SUU record books.

SUU was also well represented in the women's 400-meter hurdles, with Carly Dalton (65.23) finishing fourth, Brindisy Russell (65.39) finishing fifth and Megan Bedwell (65.94) finishing seventh.

In the 400-meter race SUU's Haley Harris inched closer to a Big Sky mark, running a season best 56.47.

On the throwing side, SUU's Cannon Brunsvik set a personal record and moved into eighth place in the SUU record book with a throw of 48.17 in the discus throw.

The Thunderbirds will be right back at it next weekend, as they will compete in two more big meets. The team will split up between the Mt. SAC Relays and the Bryan Clay Invitational.
