Soccer Prepares for Nike Portland Invitational

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The SUU soccer team will travel to Oregon this weekend to compete in the Nike Portland Invitational hosted by University of Portland.

Last weekend the Thunderbirds played matches against UC Riverside and UNLV.

The team traveled to California on Friday to play UCR and ended up coming out with a 1-1 draw. It was a stalemate for most of the game with both goals being scored in the second half. SUU's lone goal was scored by junior forward Payton Bonino in the 86th minute of the match.

The team also played their first home match of the regular season against UNLV on Sunday. The team played well, but ultimately fell to the Rebels 2-1. Junior midfielder Abbie Flandro scored the goal for the Thunderbirds off a pass from senior forward Logan Harker.

Even with the team still looking for their first win, coach Hogan remains positive about the way her team has been playing:

“If you just look at how we are playing, we are playing really, really well and have a lot of opportunities. We are right there against really good teams. We have been taking it to teams from conferences that are generally seen as better than the Big Sky. You have to be happy with the performance even though we aren't happy with the result.”

Tournament of Champions

The Nike Portland Invitational is an annual tournament held by the University of Portland Pilots. Last year's competitors included University of Washington, UC Irvine, and CSU Northridge. The Washington Huskies would end up winning the tournament with wins over Irvine and Northridge. This year the Thunderbirds will be competing for the tournament title with hosting team Portland, St. John's University, and defending tournament champions Washington. SUU will only play Portland and Washington in the tournament. There is no game scheduled against St. John's.

Know Your Opponent: Portland Pilots

The Pilots come into Friday's match with a 2-1-2 record so far in 2016. Last weekend they competed in the Husky Invitational in Seattle which saw them take matches against Seattle and Cal Poly into double overtime. Led by head coach Garrett Smith, Portland compiled a 8-11-0 overall record in 2015 and a 4-5-0 conference record which put them in fifth place in the West Coast Conference.

Know Your Opponent: Washington Huskies

The Huskies come into the tournament in the midst of a four-game winning streak and an overall record of 4-1-0 for 2016. They also competed in the Husky Invitational last weekend in which they shut out Cal Poly 3-0 and Seattle 1-0. During their four-game streak they have shut out three of their four opponents. Led by head coach Lesle Gallimore, Washington compiled a 12-7-2 overall record in 2015 and a 5-5-1 conference record which was good enough for a sixth place finish in the Pac-12 Conference.
