FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ. - The Southern Utah volleyball team traveled to Northern Arizona this weekend to compete in their final match of the season. The Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona went on to win the match in three sets.
Led by Kaylie Jorgenson, who hit 12 kills for the match, the Lumberjacks drew first blood. They gained a quick 5-2 advantage, but the Thunderbirds were able to even the score out. Trailing by just one point at 20-21, the set was up for the taking. However, a four point run from Northern Arizona sealed the deal and gave them the win 25-20.
Moving into the second set, the Thunderbirds were led by
Macky Fifita. Fifita had eight kills in the match including six digs. With the score tied at 14-14, the Lumberjacks went on another 4-0 run that gave them the advantage they needed.
Northern Arizona won the second set 25-19.
In the third and final set, the Lumberjacks gained the lead early and never looked back.
They won the final set 25-18.
Other contributors for Southern Utah were
Miranda Canez who led the team with five blocks and
Elisa Lago who earned 11 digs on the day.
Season Recap
The Thunderbird volleyball team concluded their season with a 7-21 overall record and a 2-14 record in conference play.
MaCail Evans and Fifita were the dominant forces for Southern Utah this year. Evans pounded 239 kills with a .325 hitting percentage. She also earned 132 blocks for the year, finishing 22nd in the nation for total blocks.
Fifita crushed 328 kills on the season. Along with her dominance on offense, she also led the team in digs with 346.
Thunderbird volleyball will be back in action next year.
