OGDEN, Utah - The Southern Utah soccer team opened Big Sky Conference play Friday night with a 5-2 loss to the Weber State Wildcats.
"Every game now is going to be a battle because every game means something now. We went in expecting a challenge and we got it. I thought we were pretty aggressive on offense and we got forward and created chances pretty well. It was nice to score a goal off of a set piece and I thought we had some other great opportunities that just got blocked. We are going to see if we can keep that attacking and aggressive mentality going into Sunday while getting more precise and creating more good opportunities."
MaKenzie Lawrence opened the scoring in the 18th minute with her third goal of the season. She finished off a cross from Jacqueline Villanueva who was making her first start on the front line for the Thunderbirds. Brielle Bourgeois was also credited with an assist on the goal.
The Thunderbirds held onto that 1-0 lead for about 17 minutes until the Wildcats tied it up in the 35th minute and took a 2-1 lead less than a minute later. They would take that one-goal lead into halftime.
It took 20 seconds for the Wildcats to take a two-goal lead in the second half and then they would score again in the 58th minute to make it 4-1.
Southern Utah got their second goal of the game in the 69th minute as Bourgeois finished off a free kick from Devri Hartle. Hartle sent the kick into the box where it found Taylor Harris who headed down to Bourgeois for the finisher. That was Bourgeois first goal of the 2018 season.
Weber State added to their lead in the 76th minute making it the final score of 5-2.
The Thunderbirds will continue Big Sky play Sunday in Pocatello against the Idaho State Bengals. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
