Southern Utah Volleyball Comes Up Short in Ogden

RECAP | Southern Utah Volleyball Comes Up Short in Ogden

OGDEN, Utah -- The Thunderbird volleyball team fell to their conference rivals, the Weber State Wildcats, on Thursday evening after battling through four sets. SUU is now 11-12 overall, 4-7 in Big Sky Conference play.

"I'm happy that we played with the energy and passion that we have been missing these past few games," said head coach Pete Hoyer. "We were slightly high error but our defensive was lights out and I am very proud of that. Our foundation is strong but as we travel, we can't take anyone for granted."

Shannon Webb lead SUU in kills with 13, followed by Stacey Hone who chipped in 10 of her own, respectively. Corrin Peterson continued to direct the offense as she dished out 34 assists. Sarah Gasper posted a total of 20 digs, followed by Thea Leiataua who had 17. Raegan Ashby tallied five total blocks.

The Thunderbirds were down by three at the 10 point mark at the beginning of the first set. As the set unfolded the Wildcats extended their lead to nine at 19-10. SUU wasn't able to close the gap as Weber took the set 25-16.

Set two opened with the Wildcats going up by three at 10-7 but the T-Birds fought back to take the lead at 11-10. SUU came out of a Weber break by extending their lead four to 18-14. The Thunderbirds took over and claimed the second set at 25-17.

The third set played close as the score stayed within three up for the entire set. SUU's pulled away late at 20-18 but Weber brought things within one at 21-20. The Wildcats then scored two more to take the lead at 22-21. After the T-Birds timeout, Weber reigned victorious as they took the set 25-22.

Set four was even closer than the third as the score knotted at 19-19 where the Thunderbirds called a timeout. After the break the T-Birds fell behind by two at 21-19 and called their second timeout of the set. The Wildcats ended the set on top at 25-23, earning them a 3-1 match win.

"As we head to Idaho State, I hope we keep this fire underneath us and are able to close out the tight matches. The Big Sky is close as ever and we are here to battle," said Hoyer.
