RECAP | Shannon Webb Breaks Single-Game Kill Record as Thunderbirds Sweep the Vandals

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Thunderbird volleyball team earned their seventh conference win Thursday evening as they swept the Idaho Vandals 3-0. This is the most conference wins for SUU since 2012, when they finished with eight. This win secures their spot in the Big Sky Tournament, which will be the first time the team has participated in the tournament since 2015.

Shannon Webb broke the three-set single-game kill record as she tallied 25 kills on the evening. The previous record was held by Analaine Mailoto, who put up 23 in 2010 against Centenary. Stacey Hone followed Webb's kill total with 13. Sarah Gasper led the team in digs with 18. Corrin Peterson dished out 45 assists. Katie Montgomery and Peterson led in blocks with five a piece.

"Clinching a spot in the Big Sky Tournament has been a goal of ours all season. To punch this ticket tonight is extremely exciting for our program," said head coach Pete Hoyer. "Having our libero back made a world of difference and the whole team's confidence rose. It also helped that Corrin Peterson played, in my opinion, her best game of the season. Shannon breaking the single-game kill record was the perfect cherry on top."

The Vandals beat the Thunderbirds to the 10 point mark in the first set at 10-8. The Vandals pushed their lead to four points at 15-11 where Hoyer called his first timeout. After the break Idaho continued to hold their lead, hitting the 20 point mark as the T-Birds trailed by six. SUU's comeback effort knotted the score 24-24. As play continued the scored tied again at 25-25 and 26-26. A kill from Webb and ace from Gasper closed the set for the T-Birds 28-26.

SUU led 13-6 before Idaho called their first timeout in the second set. The Thunderbirds extended their lead to nine at 18-9 before the Vandals were able to sideout. SUU stayed on top for the duration of the set, earning their second set win at 25-16.

The Thunderbirds led the Vandals by two at the 10 point mark. SUU continued to separate themselves taking an eight point lead at 18-10 before the Vandals were able to sideout. The T-Birds didn't let up as they continued to push their lead to 10 at 22-12. SUU took the set 25-14, earning them a 3-0 match win.
