FARMINGTON, Utah - The Big Sky Conference announced the Individual Award winners for the 2019 volleyball season Wednesday afternoon and Thunderbird senior Shannon Webb was named the winner of the Newcomer of the Year Award.
"For Shannon to be the second leading scorer in the conference, given the number of balls we were setting her, is incredible because I'm pretty sure she has everyone's attention in their scouting reports," head coach Pete Hoyer said. "Our whole goal this year was to speed up our offense and Shannon was able to get in on the ground floor and become an essential piece of that effort."
Webb is in her first season as a Thunderbird after transferring from American University for her senior season. The Colorado native finished the regular season second in the Big Sky in kills, averaging 3.82 per set. She also finished second in points with 462 total points, averaging 4.09 points per set.
Webb led the team in both those categories and finished second on the team in digs with 316.
"She is an incredibly competitive person who has achieved a great deal, as Gatorade Player of the Year in Colorado and then at American University," Hoyer said. "Her experience and maturity was a missing ingredient, so to be able to throw that into the mix last spring was incredible."
The Thunderbirds will open the Big Sky Volleyball Championship Tournament tomorrow in Sacramento as the No. 7 seed against No. 2-seeded Weber State at noon.
