RECAP | Southern Utah Volleyball Swept by Sacramento at HomeÂ
CEDAR CITY, Utah — The Thunderbird volleyball program fell 3-0 to the Hornets of Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon inside the America First Event Center. SUU is now 13-13 overall and 6-8 in Big Sky play.Â
"We lacked defensively today and just couldn't find our mojo after the first set loss," said head coach Pete Hoyer. "Going to Montana next weekend and competing will be crucial for our placement within (BSC) standings."
Shannon Webb had nine kills followed by Stacey Hone who had eight. Corrin Peterson tallied 21 assists for the Thunderbirds. Thea Leiataua led the SUU defense with 13 digs.Â
The Hornets earned an early lead over the Thunderbirds at 11-7 in the first set. SUU's comeback effort brought them within two at 14-12 after going on a 3-0 scoring run. Sacramento earned a sideout and went on a 5-0 scoring run, pushing their lead to eight at 21-13. The Thunderbirds weren't able to recover as the Hornets took the set 25-18.Â
SUU chased the Hornets at the 7-2 mark but fought their way back with two at 8-6 before Sacramento was able to rally back. As the set unfolded the Hornets extended their lead to nine at 18-9. The Thunderbirds battle back fell short as Sacramento took the second set 25-16.
The Thunderbirds opened the third set by going up 5-0 over the Hornets. Sacramento fought back and knotted the score at 12-12 and took their first lead of the set at 13-12. The lead teetered back-and-forth as the score tied at 13-13 and 14-14 before the Hornets went up by two at 16-14. Sacramento was the first to 20 where the T-Birds trailed by four. SUU wasn't able to recover as the Hornets took the set 25-19, earning them a 3-0 match win.Â

The Thunderbirds will travel to Montana next week to face the Montana State Bobcats and the Montana Grizzlies.Â
