LAS VEGAS - The Southern Utah softball team wrapped up their first weekend of play Sunday afternoon with a 3-11 six inning loss to the UNLV Rebels.
Rylie Nance was 2-for-2 in the game with a double and Samantha Guerra went 1-for-3 with a double, a RBI, and a run scored. Makenzie Ball and Emilee Reeder both also had RBIs in the loss.
The Rebels piled it on early offensively scoring eight runs in the first three innings while holding the Thunderbirds scoreless. Guerra and Reeder picked up their RBIs in the fourth inning as the T-Birds were able to string a couple of hits together.
They scored again the fifth as Ball grounded out to the right side to score the runner from third base.
With the score sitting at 9-3, the Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game.
Overall, the Thunderbirds went 1-4 in the tournament with their only win coming over North Dakota. Nance hit .364 (4-for-11) in five games and Whetten hit .357 (5-for-14) in her first collegiate games. Reeder and Kendall Kapitzke had four RBIs each. As a team, they Thunderbirds were 5-for-5 in stealing bases.
The Thunderbirds will return to the field on February 23 in California for a three-game series with the University of San Diego.
