Thunderbirds Drop Doubleheader With San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Southern Utah softball team played the first two games of a three-game series with the University of San Diego Saturday afternoon, losing the first game 1-12 and the second 2-4.

Madison Tuft had hits in both games, going 2-for-6 with a run scored and a stolen base on the day. Dream Weaver had two hits in game two with a RBI and Makall Whetten hit her first career home run in game one. Hanna Wynn pitched six innings in the game two, five of which were scoreless.

The Thunderbirds struck first in game one on Whetten's solo home run in the first inning, but the Toreros went on to score in every inning. They scored six runs in the second inning to take a 8-1 lead and expanded that to 12-1 to take the win in five innings.

Game two was much closer and saw the Thunderbirds hold a lead for the first five and a half innings. They scored in the first inning in this one two as Tuft walked, stole second, and then was brought home on a RBI single to right field by Dream Weaver. The game stayed 1-0 SUU for five innings as Wynn held the Toreros scoreless.

The Thunderbirds scored again in the top of the sixth inning as Hannah Williams walked, moved to second base on a wild pitch, and then was brought home to score on a RBI infield single by Javlyn Weaver.

San Diego's bats got hot in the bottom of the sixth inning, however, as they scored four runs on six hits in the inning. The Thunderbirds couldn't answer in the seventh, losing the game 4-2.

The Thunderbirds will play the final game of the series against the Toreros tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. Mountain time.
