Thunderbirds Split Day Two at UNLV With Win Over North Dakota

LAS VEGAS - The Southern Utah softball team picked up their first win of the season Saturday night, 7-6 over former Big Sky opponent North Dakota.

Hannah Williams had three RBIs in the win, including the game-winner as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Earlier in the game she hit her first career home run, a two-run shot to left field in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2 SUU.

Madison Tuft and Makall Whetten both went 2-for-4 and scored two runs in the game, with Whetten picking up an RBI as well. Dream Weaver and Emilee Reeder had hits in the win as well.

It was a back and forth affair for much of the game as each time one team would score it seemed that the other had an answer. The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the first inning and held a 2-0 lead until the fourth when North Dakota tied it. Williams it her home run in the bottom of that inning making it 4-2 before the Fighting Hawks answered back in the fifth with three runs. The T-Birds tied it in the bottom half of the inning and North Dakota took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh.

Down to their final three outs, the Thunderbirds loaded the bases with just one out. Reeder tied the game with a RBI single to right field before Williams was hit for the game winner.

Nicole Wall got the first win of her career in the circle after pitching 2.1 innings of relief and giving up just one hit and one run with three strikeouts.

The Thunderbirds also played a game against Utah Valley earlier in the day, but dropped that contest 3-10, despite having 11 hits in the game. Whetten went 2-for-3 in that game and so did Rylie Nance. Sydni Sorensen added 5.0 innings of relief in the circle and gave up just two earned runs during that time.

Whetten was a combined 4-for-7 on the day and is now batting .417 on the weekend.

Southern Utah will wrap up play in the UNLV Marucci Desert Classic on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against UNLV.
