CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team played their third overtime game of the season Thursday night against Sacramento State. The Hornets held all of the momentum after forcing the extra period and used it to beat the Thunderbirds 75-69.
The Lady T-Birds are now 2-1 in overtime games this season.
Harley Hansen put together her first career double-double in the loss with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Ashley Larsen led the T-Birds with 18 points and two blocks.
After a hot start by the Hornets the Thunderbirds were able to chip away and tie things up at 13 by the end of the first quarter. Southern Utah had a big second quarter that was sparked by six straight points by Hansen. The T-Birds put together a 17-3 run, shooting six of seven from the field and going from being down two to leading by 10.
They would go into halftime with a 34-28 lead.
The Thunderbirds used the third quarter to build on their lead, outscoring the Hornets 17-14. They held their biggest lead of the night with 8:40 to play in the fourth, up by 11. With 6:06 to play Claudia Armato knocked down a three to make it 58-49, but that was the last time they would score in regulation. Sacramento State used a 9-0 run and a huge scoring drought by SUU to tie the game and send it into overtime.
For the most part overtime was a back-and-forth affair, but a 6-0 run from the Hornets about halfway through would prove to be the difference in the end as they took the 75-69 victory.
The Lady T-Birds will return to the court on Saturday as they host Portland State.
