CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team fell to Portland State Saturday afternoon 56-81. The Vikings shot 65.5 percent from the field in the first half and outscored the Thunderbirds 26-8 in the second quarter.
Breanu Reid led the Thunderbirds with 11 points and six rebounds and Jessica Chatman finished with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting.
The T-Birds never held a lead in the game as the Vikings scored the first bucket of the game and never looked back. They jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter, but the Thunderbirds were able to hang with them trailing by just six at the end of the period.
The second quarter was all Vikings as they jumped out to an eleven-point lead with 7:12 to play in the half. They would build that lead into a 24-point lead by the end of the half.
The T-Birds kept it close in the second half, outscoring the Vikings 16-15 in the third and scoring 14 more points in the fourth quarter while holding PSU to 16. They wouldn't be able to overcome the big first half from Portland State however as they were only able to cut the lead to as little as 18.
The Thunderbirds will be on the road next week taking on Eastern Washington and Idaho.
