OGDEN, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team dropped a close game to in-state rival Weber State Thursday afternoon 66-67. The Wildcats won the game on a layup from Emily Drake with less than a second on the clock.
The final quarter saw six lead changes between the two teams with neither team getting up by more than five. With 5:28 to play, Claudia Armato knocked down a three to give the T-Birds as five-point lead. The Wildcats then went on an 8-0 run to make it 63-60 in their favor.
With 18 seconds to play the Thunderbirds got possession on a jump ball and used the inbounds play to get the ball to Ashley Larsen. Larsen got the layup to fall giving SUU a 66-65 advantage.
After two missed free throws from both teams, the Wildcats had one last possession with five second to play. Drake got the ball at half court and was able to beat the Thunderbirds to the basket and score the game winning bucket.
It was a close game most of the way through. The Wildcats had their biggest lead of the game in the first quarter as they led by six with 2:18 to go in the quarter. From there the Thunderbirds were able to go on a 17-0 run that lasted into the second quarter and built their lead to 11.
The Wildcats answered back with a huge run of their own to retake the lead. Neither team would be able to pull away after that.
Reid was the leading scorer for the Thunderbirds with 15 points. She also pulled in four rebounds and was 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Cardenas finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, Hansen had 11 points, and Thomas had 10 points.
The loss moves the Lady T-Birds to 6-15 on the season and 3-9 in Big Sky play. They will take on Idaho State in Pocatello on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
