ST GEORGE, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team hosted Utah Valley for a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, dropping both games to the Wolverines.
Mikelle Magalogo had four hits on the day, including two home runs. The junior had six RBIs, scored three runs, and even took over catching duties in game two after starting game one at first base.
Dream Weaver, Madison Tuft, and Rylie Nance all had three hits on the day as the Thunderbirds complied 21 hits on the day as a team.
In game one the Wolverines jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Magalogo hit her first home run of the game in the third inning as the Thunderbirds scored two runs to make it 6-2. After a solo home run from UVU in the fourth, Magalogo answered with another solo shot in the fifth.
Both teams scored three runs in the sixth inning with Magalogo picking up two more RBIs and Samantha Guerra picking up one, both on singles.
The Wolverines scored two more runs in the seventh to make it the final score of 12-6.
In game two the Thunderbirds held a 2-1 lead after one inning of play. Both runs came on a Magalogo single that brought home Guerra and Weaver.
The Wolverines answered with three runs over the second and third innings to take a 4-2 lead, but the Thunderbirds tied things up in the bottom of the third on a RBI single from Weaver and another RBI for Guerra.
Utah Valley then scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take a big 11-4 lead.
An RBI double in the fifth from Emilee Reeder and another in the sixth from Weaver gave the Thunderbirds two more runs, but it wouldn't be enough to catch the Wolverines.
The Thunderbirds have a big week coming up in California as they will play a doubleheader against California Baptist University on Wednesday March 13 and then compete in a tournament at UC Riverside from March 15-17.
