Comeback Falls Short In Game Two as Thunderbirds Drop Doubleheader to Lancers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Southern Utah softball team traveled to California for a doubleheader against the California Baptist Lancers. They were shut out in game one, but put together a comeback in game two that saw them score six runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game before losing in extras.

Madison Tuft and Dream Weaver were the only Thunderbirds to have hits in both games, both picking up three hits total on the day. They each scored one run and Weaver had two RBIs and a stolen base.

They both now lead the team offensively with Weaver hitting .333 and Tuft hitting .319.

The Thunderbirds only had two hits in the first game, a single from Tuft in the first inning and a single from Weaver in the fourth. The Lancers score runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings, but only five out of their nine runs were earned as the Thunderbirds committed four errors in the game.

A two-run home run from the Lancers ended the game in the sixth inning.

The Thunderbirds scored in the first inning of game two as Tuft led off the game with a double and Weaver brought her home in the next at-bat with a RBI single. From there the Lancers used three home runs to build up a 7-1 lead by the end of the sixth inning.

Down to their final three outs, the Thunderbirds put together a six-run seventh to tie the game 7-7. They used five hits, two walks, and forced CBU to use three different pitchers in the inning. Megan Bull led off the inning with a pinch hit single and would later score from second base on a throwing error by the CBU catcher. Kendall Kapitzke and Heather Hinton both walked and Kapitzke scored on a Dream Weaver double to make it 7-3.

Southern Utah then scored four runs in four at-bats to tie the game as Mikelle Magalogo, Emilee Reeder, Samantha Guerra, and Makenzie Ball all picked up RBIs.

The Lancers scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the walkoff victory.

The Thunderbirds will open play at a tournament hosted by UC Riverside on Friday with games against the Highlanders and Northern Kentucky.
