SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Southern Utah softball team opened Big Sky Conference play Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against the reigning Big Sky champs, Sacramento State. The Thunderbirds dropped both games to the Hornets losing the first 9-3 and the second 9-1 in five innings.
Madison Tuft and Dream Weaver were the only Thunderbirds to have hits in both games on Friday, each picking up one per game. Tuft also scored one of the three Thunderbird runs in game one. Samantha Guerra also had two hits on the day, both of them coming in game one. The junior also picked up a RBI and scored a run.
The Thunderbirds came out and scored three runs in the first inning of game one as Tuft, Guerra, Mikelle Magalogo, and Hannah Williams all were able to string together hits and make it 3-0 SUU early.
The Hornets then began to chip away, scoring one run of their own in the bottom of the first, tying and taking a 4-3 lead in the fourth and expanding their lead to 9-3 in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Thunderbirds wouldn't be able to answer back, picking up just two more hits the rest of the way.
Southern Utah didn't fare much better in game two as they only had four hits and were shut out for most of the game until the fifth inning. With the Hornets up 9-0 in the fifth, Kendall Kapitzke hit her way on base and then scored on a RBI double from Makall Whetten.
That would be the only run they scored however as the game came to a close 9-1 after five innings.
The Thunderbirds and the Hornets will play the series finale in Sacramento tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Mountain time.
