CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team played their first games at Kathryn Berg Field Wednesday afternoon, hosting the UMKC Kangaroos for a doubleheader. Despite big offensive performances from Kendall Kapitzke and Madison Tuft, the Thunderbirds dropped both games, 9-6 and 10-3.
Kapitzke went a combined 6-for-7 over the two games, with a home run and a double in the first game. She also collected three RBIs and scored twice. Tuft went 5-for-7 and scored a run in game two. She extended her current on-base streak to 18 games.
Dream Weaver had three hits on the day, with at least on in each game to extend her hitting streak to 12 games.
The Thunderbirds found themselves in a 5-0 hole early in game one as the Kangaroos put together a big five-run second inning. Kapitzke got SUU on the board in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to left in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-1.
From there they scored in the third, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, chipping away at the UNKC lead, including another two RBIs for Kapitzke and a solo home run from Makall Whetten. The Kangaroos were able to keep the Thunderbirds at bay though, adding two runs in the third, and one more each in the fourth and seventh innings.
Kapitzke ended the game a triple shy of the cycle.
The Thunderbirds struck first in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Dream Weaver double down the left field line. However, that would be the only time they would score in the game while UMKC was able to score at least one run in every inning except for the first and third.
Tuft, Kapitzke, and Weaver all finished the game 2-for-3, but the rest of the team combined for just two hits.
The Thunderbirds will return to Kathryn Berg Field on Tuesday April 2 to host BYU.
