Thunderbirds Split Doubleheader With Bears In St. George

ST GEORGE, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team earned their second Big Sky win of the season Friday afternoon, after splitting a doubleheader with Northern Colorado, losing the first game 4-7 and winning the second game 4-3 in eight innings.

Kendall Kapitzke and Madison Carr had four hits each on the day, with two in each game. Kapitzke hit her second grand slam in as many games in game one and Carr went 4-for-7 with the game-winning hit in game two.

Makall Whetten went 3-for-4 in game two with a RBI and scored the game winning run. Dream Weaver had at least one hit in each game to extend her current hitting streak to 18 games. Hannah Lilly pitched eight innings and got her first career win in game two. She threw seven scoreless innings while striking out four Bears after giving up three runs in the first inning.

Game one was all Bears until the fifth inning as they scored five runs in the first and two more in the fourth to make it a 7-0 game. After two bunts and some small ball allowed the Thunderbirds to load the bases in the fifth, Kapitzke hit her grand slam to make it 7-4. The slam was her second in two games and also meant that she had knocked in the Thunderbirds' last eight runs in a row.

The T-Birds had a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh, but wouldn't be able to score as the Bears won 7-4.

The Bears scored first in game two as well, making it 3-0 after the first inning. It would stay that way until the third inning when the Thunderbirds began to chip away at their lead. Makenzie Ball knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the third, Carr made it 3-2 in the fourth with a RBI infield single, and Whetten tied the game in the sixth with a RBI double.

After a rain/lightning delay in the bottom of the seventh, the game went to the eighth inning tied at 3-3. With one out, Whetten doubled to left center and came around to score on the very next play as Carr laid down a bunt to get her to third and the UNC third baseman threw the ball away allowing her to score.

The Thunderbirds will look to win their first series of the season tomorrow as the two teams play the rubber match at noon.
