Thunderbirds Win Slugfest With Northern Colorado to Take the Series

ST GEORGE, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team won their first Big Sky series Saturday with a 16-11 win over Northern Colorado. The two teams combined for 27 runs and 33 hits, including eight extra base hits.

Every T-Bird that stepped to the plate had at least one hit in the game, with six T-Birds having multiple hit games and seven of them collecting at least one RBI. Samantha Guerra went 4-for-4 in the game, hitting her first career home run and picking up three RBIs and three runs scored. Dream Weaver also had four hits in the game, going 4-for-5, and extending her current hitting streak to 19 games.

Kendall Kapitzke and Mikelle Magalogo both had three hits in the game, with Magalogo hitting two doubles and Kapitzke hitting a double and a two-run home run. Kapitzke picked up four more RBIs giving her eight in the series and 15 in her last five games. The senior is also on a nine game hitting streak.

Three different Thunderbirds worked in the circle with Sydni Sorensen picking up the win in relief, her first win as a Thunderbird. Each pitcher only gave up one earned run during their time in the circle as most of UNC's runs came with two outs in the inning after and SUU error earlier in the inning.

The Bears scored first for the third time in the series, putting up a three-spot in the first inning. They would hold that 3-0 lead until the bottom of the third when the Thunderbird offense came to life and scored eight runs in the inning. The inning was highlighted by Kapitzke's and Guerra's home runs, both two-run shots.

Northern Colorado quickly dispatched of SUU's five-run lead in the fifth inning as they scored seven runs, six of them unearned, to take a 10-8 lead.

The Thunderbird offense could not be cooled down however, as they answered right back in bottom half of the inning with five more runs to retake the lead at 13-10. They added three more runs in the sixth to get to their final total of 16.

The Bears were able to get one run across with their final three outs, but the T-Birds were able to close out the victory and take the series 16-11.

Southern Utah will be on the road next weekend for a three-game series with Portland State.
