Thunderbirds Use Big Offensive Burst In Game Two to Split Doubleheader With Bengals

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team split a doubleheader with Idaho State Friday afternoon thanks to a big 12-4 five-inning win in game two. They lost game one 5-3.

Madison Carr had four hits on the day including a 3-for-4 line in game one. She also had a RBi and scored two runs in game two. Makall Whetten had three hits, going 2-for-3 in game two with 3 RBIs and two runs scored.

Sydni Sorensen picked up the win in the circle in game two, pitching five innings and giving up eight hits and three earned runs.

The Thunderbirds had their foot on the gas from the start in game two. After the Bengals scored the first run, Emilee Reeder gave SUU a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first with a triple that knocked in two runs.

The Bengals tied the game in the second and made it 3-2 in the third, but that would be the last time they would hold a lead.

The T-Birds had their first five-run inning in the bottom of the third as Samantha Guerra and Whetten both knocked in two runs and Hannah Williams knocked in another to make it 7-3.

The Bengals got one back in the top of the fifth to make it 7-4, but the Thunderbirds weren't finished as they came out and scored five more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Rylie Nance and Carr both picked up RBIs in the inning and Whetten knocked in her third run of the game. Dream Weaver had the game winning hit as she singled to right field bringing home Whetten and Carr to give the Thunderbirds the 12-4 victory.

Game one was a lot closer with the Bengals coming out on top by two runs. The Thunderbirds scored first as Kendall Kapitzke doubled home Mikelle Magalogo in the second inning. The Bengals would end up taking a two-run led by the fifth inning and were able to maintain it with two more runs in the sixth.

Whetten had a RBI in the fifth and Makenzie Ball brought home a run in the sixth. Magalogo had two doubles in the game and scored twice.

The Thunderbirds and the Bengals will play the rubber match tomorrow at noon at Kathryn Berg Field.
