OGDEN, Utah - Despite a first-inning grand slam from Kendall Kapitzke, the Southern Utah softball team couldn't avoid a series sweep from Weber State, losing the series finale 9-4.
Kapitzke's grand slam came with no outs in the first as Makall Whetten singled to lead off the game, Madison Carr drew a walk, and Dream Weaver singled to load the bases. The senior then hit her fourth home run of the season, giving her seven RBIs in the series and the Thunderbirds an early 4-0 lead.
That would be the only time the Thunderbirds would score in the game however, and the big lead didn't last long. The Wildcats scored one run in the bottom of the inning, but then followed that up with five-runs in the second inning to take a 6-4 lead.
They would add on to their lead in the fourth with three more runs to make it 9-4.
The Thunderbirds were only able to pick up two more hits throughout the rest of the game, another single from Whetten, as she went 2-for-3, and a double from Mikelle Magalogo.
Southern Utah will return home to host Northern Colorado for a three-game series next weekend.
