RECAP | Southern Utah Volleyball Defeats Weber State in Five Sets
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- For the first time in six years, the Thunderbird volleyball team defeated the Weber State Wildcats 3-2.
"To be able to turn around, get a win on homecoming, against our rival team, means the world to our team," said head coach Pete Hoyer. "Our team has a goal up in the locker room and they will fight like dogs to achieve it. I am proud of their effort tonight."
Shannon Webb set a career record tonight with 25 kills. She was followed by Katie Montgomery who had 10 kills of her own. Montgomery led in blocks with five followed by Raegan Ashby who had four. Webb also tallied the most digs on the night with 17. Corrin Peterson set a career record with 52 assists.
The Thunderbirds went up by three early in the first set where they beat the Wildcats to the 10 point mark at 10-7. Weber State called a timeout once the T-Birds were up by four at 12-8. Coming out of the timeout the Thunderbirds went on a 8-1 scoring run, extending their lead to 18-9. The Wildcats comeback effort wasn't enough as SUU took the first set 25-17. Hone finished the set with seven kills followed by Webb who had five.
Weber State was the first to 10 in the second set at 10-5 but SUU brought themselves within two at 11-9. Coach Hoyer called a timeout at 18-12 where the Thunderbirds trailed by six. The Thunderbirds weren't able to recover from the setback, allowing the Wildcats to take the set 25-17.
The Thunderbirds went down by six before the first timeout was called at 7-1. Coming out of the timeout, the T-Birds weren't able to recover as they Wildcats ran their score up by four more, at 11-4. SUU came back within reach and eventually knotted the score at 13-13 after an ace from Peterson. The score tied again at 15-15 but the Wildcats went up by two at 18-16. SUU brought things back at 21-21 and a block from Hone put the T-Birds up for the first time in the set. Weber State made their way back to win the set at 25-22.
The fourth set began with the Wildcats making their way to 10 points first but the Thunderbirds weren't far behind at eight. A service ace from Averett knotted the score at 10-10 and a WSU attack error gave SUU the lead at 11-10. The Thunderbirds then went on a 4-0 scoring run, pushing their lead to four at 15-11. Coming out of a Weber State timeout the Thunderbirds tacked on five more before the Wildcats were able to sideout at 20-13. The deficit was too much for Weber State as SUU took the set 25-16.
SUU opened the fifth and final set by going up on the Wildcats by four before Weber State called a timeout. The Thunderbirds held their largest lead at 7-2 but the Wildcats rallied back within two at 7-5. After switching sides the T-Birds were the first to 10 after a kill from Webb at 9-7. The Thunderbirds continued to hold their lead, pushing the score to 14-10 with Montgomery to serve. The Wildcats received a side out after a kill, putting the score to 14-11. A kill from Shannon Webb ended the set at 15-11, giving SUU the match 3-2.
