FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Southern Utah women's basketball team dropped a 76-84 decision to Northern Arizona on the road Thursday night to move to 2-3 in Big Sky play on the season.
Rebecca Cardenas led all scorers in the game with 26 points, which brought her to 1,004 career points, making her the 14th member of the Southern Utah women's basketball 1,000-point club. The senior will now look to move up the ranks in the record books as she sits 14th all-time in points scored with 15 games to go in the regular season.
Harley Hansen was the second leading scorer for the T-Birds with 16 points and Jessica Chatman also broke into double-digits with 10 points. Shalyn Fano was the leading rebounder with five.
The T-Birds got off to a slow start in the first quarter, scoring just six points while the Lumberjacks scored 18 points, thanks to a 9-0 run to close out the period.
The offense then exploded in the second quarter shooting 70.6 percent from the field (12-for-17) and scoring 32 points. Cardenas and Hansen had 11 points each and they forced the 'Jacks into four turnovers. NAU was able to retain their lead however, scoring 25 points and went into the break with a 43-38 lead.
The two teams played a close second half all the way through, with neither team going on a run bigger than six. The Lumberjacks extended their lead by three points in the third quarter and then kept pace with the Thunderbirds in the fourth to close out the 84-76 victory.
The Thunderbirds will now head to Sacramento, California for a matchup with Sacramento State on Saturday.
