CEDAR CITY, Utah - An eight-game home winning streak came to an end for the Southern Utah women's basketball Monday night with a 71-56 loss to the Idaho Vandals.
"Idaho is a great team and they were great defensively," head coach Tracy Sanders said. "We could have used some more second-chance opportunities and we had to work hard for everything and we didn't execute great."
Harley Hansen led all scorers with 19 points in the contest. The Big Sky's leading three-point shooter went 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Madelyn Eaton put up 10 points and led the team in rebounding with eight.
The first half was a close contest with the Thunderbirds leading for a significant amount of time in the first quarter. However, a couple of lead changes led to the Vandals being up by two at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Idaho built up to a six-point lead in the second quarter, but the Thunderbirds were able to tie the game at 25-25 with 4:12 to go in the half. A 7-0 run made it 32-25 Vandals, and they would go into halftime with a three-point lead over the T-Birds.
The third quarter is where things fell apart for Southern Utah as they were outshot by Idaho 60 percent to 27.3 percent. They made just seven baskets in the entire second half as the Vandals continued to pull away.
The Thunderbirds will hit the road for four straight games, starting with Weber State on Thursday January 30.
