Lady T-Birds Pick Up Road Rivalry Win Over Weber State In Ogden

OGDEN, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team picked up a 87-71 win over in-state rival Weber State Thursday night in Ogden.

The Thunderbirds are now 10-8 overall on the season and 4-5 in Big Sky play.

Rebecca Cardenas picked up her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 assists. The senior also went 7-for-9 from the field and had four steals. Harley Hansen put up 16 points and also had four steals. Four other Thunderbirds hit double-digits as Madelyn Eaton had 14 points, Shalyn Fano had 12, Jessica Chatman had 10, and Ashley Larsen had 10.

As a team the Thunderbirds shot 55.4 percent from the field and forced the Wildcats into 22 turnovers, scoring 26 of their points off those turnovers.

The Wildcats scored first in this one, taking a quick 2-0 lead, but that would turn out to be their only lead of the game, and it didn't last long. Fano and Hansen hit back-to-back-to-back threes to make it 9-2 SUU with 5:27 to go in the first quarter. By the end of the first 10 minutes, they held an 11-point lead over the Wildcats.

Hansen scored 14 of her points in the first half as the Thunderbirds cruised to a 14-point lead at halftime.

Both teams caught fire in the third quarter as the T-Birds shot 60 percent and the Wildcats shot 53.8 percent. WSU's Daryn Hickok put up 15 points in the period, but contributions from Chatman and Cardenas helped Southern Utah maintain their double-digit lead.

The Thunderbirds were able to push their lead all the way out to 21 points with just five minutes left to go in the game, before taking home the 87-71 victory.

The Thunderbirds will now head to Pocatello for a matchup with Idaho State on Saturday February 1.
