LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Southern Utah softball team competed in the UNLV Rebel Kickoff this weekend where they went 1-4 in games against Oregon State, CSUN, and UNLV. Their lone win came on Saturday 2-1 over the Beavers. It was the the first win for head coach Don Don Williams and the first win for the program over a Pac-12 opponent since 2014.
Paige Reynolds hit .333 (4-for-12) in her first five games in a Thunderbird uniform. She slugged .500 with a triple in Saturday's game against CSUN. Dayna Hokanson hit .308 (4-for-13) with three RBI, two walks, two runs scored, and an on-base percentage of .438. Mikelle Magalogo slugged .643 with nine total bases, three RBI, and two runs scored.
In the win over the Beavers, the pitching took center-stage as Koryne Coddington, Kamryn Grover, and Sydni Sorensen combined to hold OSU to just one run on nine hits and zero walks. Coddington earned the win, her first as a Thunderbird, and Sorensen earned the save.
Makall Whetten (1-for-3) and Hokanson (1-for-2) had the only two hits and scored the two runs in the win for the T-Birds. The Beavers scored first on back-to-back doubles in the first inning, but a leadoff single from Hokanson and a couple of miscues from the Oregon State defense would give the Thunderbirds a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.
The Thunderbirds had their best offensive game on Friday in their first matchup with CSUN. Down 8-0, they were able to score two runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Hokanson and Samantha Guerra. Hokanson knocked in two more runs in the sixth followed by a RBI triple from Magalogo to make it 8-5. Unfortunately that's where the scoring stopped allowing the Matadors to take home the win.
Southern Utah closed out the weekend with a 2-6 loss to the host Rebels. They scored their two runs in the seventh inning on a 2-RBI single from Skyler Ball that scored Mackenzie Whitten and Magalogo.
The Thunderbirds will be back in action next weekend in San Diego, California at the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State.
