Southern Utah WAC Membership FAQ

Q: When is Southern Utah officially moving to the WAC?

A: Southern Utah will become an official member of the Western Athletic Conference on July 1, 2022. Until that point, they will remain a member of the Big Sky Conference. 

Q: What new teams are joining the WAC with Southern Utah? 

A: Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin will all be joining the WAC with Southern Utah on July 1, 2022 from the Southland Conference. 

Q: How many teams will be in the WAC when Southern Utah joins?

A: There will be 13 full time members of the WAC, and seven members that play football. The teams will be broken into two divisions for all sports other than football, men's basketball and women' basketball.

West Division: California Baptist, Dixie State, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, Seattle University, Southern Utah and Utah Valley

Southwest Division: Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton and UT Rio Grande Valley   

Q: Is Southern Utah dropping football in order to join the WAC?

A: No, the WAC is bringing back football as a sponsored sport. The Thunderbirds will be one of seven member institutions that compete in FCS football.  

Q: Will football in the WAC be considered FCS or FBS?

A: Starting in 2022, the WAC will be considered an FCS football conference. That is the level of football the Thunderbirds compete in currently as members of the Big Sky Conference.   

Q: Will gymnastics be joining the WAC again?

A: As of now, the Flippin' Birds will remain a member of the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference. The WAC does not currently sponsor gymnastics.

Q: Will Southern Utah consider adding any other sports when joining the WAC?

A: It is not in the immediate plans of Southern Utah University to add any more sports. 

Q: Is Southern Utah dropping any other sports in order to join the WAC?

A: No, Southern Utah University will not need to make any changes with their sponsored sports when joining the WAC. 

Q: Once Southern Utah joins the WAC, how can I watch the T-Birds?

A: The WAC Digital Network (WDN) is the official network of the Western Athletic Conference. It encompasses original live programming from around the conference. The WDN is available on both your desktop and mobile/tablet devices, as well as for over-the-top (OTT) platforms, including Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV. In addition to the more than 600 games and matches aired annually on the WDN, all game broadcasts are available 'On Demand'.

In addition, the WDN produces more than 60 events exclusively for ESPN. WAC tournaments in men's & women's basketball, baseball, men's & women's soccer, softball, volleyball, the men's and women's swimming & diving championships, plus select regular season men's basketball games air on ESPN+. The deal also includes the WAC Men's and Women's Basketball Championship games produced by ESPN and airing on their family of networks.

Q: What sports does the WAC offer that Southern Utah does not compete in? 

A: The WAC offers M/W Swimming & Diving, M/W Tennis, M Soccer and Baseball, all of which Southern Utah does not currently offer.
