CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah gymnastics team will open their 2021 home schedule this weekend as they host Air Force on Saturday January 16 at 7:00 p.m. inside the America First Event Center.
Last Time Out
The Flippin' Birds opened up their 2021 campaign at the Best of Utah meet at the Maverik Center last Saturday, as they finished in fourth place amongst Utah's three other Division I gymnastics teams with a 194.325.
The University of Utah won the meet with a 196.900. Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference foes BYU (195.700) and Utah State (194.350) finished in second and third respectively.
MRGC Specialists of the Week
Southern Utah juniors Mayson Bentley and Karley McClain both earned MRGC Specialist of the Week honors for their performances at the Best of Utah in week one.
Bentley was named MRGC Bars Specialist of the Week after scoring a 9.900 in her first routine as a Thunderbird.
McClain was named MRGC Beam Specialist of the Week after scoring a 9.850 and finishing in fifth on the event. This is the South Jordan native's second Beam Specialist of the Week honor and the ninth total Specialist/Gymnast of the Week honor in her career.
Scouting Report: Air Force Falcons
Saturday's meet will be the season opener for the Falcons. They had a record of 2-12 when the 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19. They scored a high score of 193.825 in a tri-meet against Denver and Ball State.
The Falcons were ranked No. 60 in the country when the season came to an end. They were ranked 50th on floor, 54th on vault, 61st on bars, and 67th on beam.
Head coach Jennifer Green is in her first season at the helm of the program after spending six seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa.
Meet Day Information
Saturday's meet is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. inside the America First Event Center. Students will be allowed to pick up tickets for the meet beginning at 6:00 p.m. inside the Sharwan Smith Student Center Rotunda. Students must be able to present a valid Student ID and a recent negative COVID test in order to get a ticket.
SUU faculty and staff will also be offered a limited number of complimentary tickets. They can pick them up at the ticket office with a valid Staff ID on the day of the meet.
The meet will be streamed live on PlutoTV channel 1055 and live scoring will be available at suutbirds.com.
