SACRAMENTO, California-- After playing to a draw on Friday, the Southern Utah University women's soccer team earned another road point as they defeated Sacramento State 2-0 on a stormy Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Thunderbirds finish the season (2-13-2) overall and (1-6-2) in the Big Sky Conference, while Sacramento State fell to (4-11-2) on the year and (3-6-0) in conference play.
"Today was awesome for our players, " said SUU head coach Kai Edwards. "After a tough season, to get a win and a tie on the road shows the character of this group. We had two quality set-piece goals, and shutouts in a storm are not easy, but our group worked hard together all weekend and earned it. Credit to the seniors that ended their careers strong."
SUU came out of the gate fast and immediately put themselves on the offensive. The T-Birds began to dominate in the midfield and control the possession battle. They nearly broke the game open in the 1st minute when Ashley Rivera found some space inside the Hornet 18-yard-box and peppered a shot towards the top right corner of the net that the Sac State goalkeeper was able to bat out of bounds.
The Thunderbirds continued to find space and make deep runs inside the Sac State final third. They finally broke through in the 38th minute when the Thunderbirds earned a free-kick just outside the box. Forward Kamryn Farro set up to take the set-piece and launched a shot past the Hornets' goalkeeper and into the bottom right corner of the net, giving the T-Birds the lead going into the half.
The T-Birds came out of the half with the same intensity and began to pile more on. As a team, the Thunderbirds fired nine more shots at the Sacramento State goalkeeper in the second half and broke through again in the 54th-minute after earning another free-kick near the corner flag. Farro set up to take the set-piece and fired the ball inside the box to midfielder Hailey Hamataka. Hamataka turned and sent a pass to her right to a streaking Rachael Hunt, who collected the ball and fired a low shot into the back of the net.
Sacramento State showed signs of life late and began to find opportunities of their own inside the Thunderbirds final third. They nearly cut into the lead in the 81st minute when defender Isabella Visonhaler found some space inside the box and fired a shot to the bottom left corner of the net, but SUU goalkeeper Megan Short dove and batted the ball away, spoiling the Hornets hopes of scoring, and securing the clean sheet victory for the Thunderbirds.
