CEDAR CITY, Utah-- The Southern Utah University women's soccer team fell to the Idaho State Bengals, 3-2, in a rainy hard-fought battle Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Thunderbirds dropped to (1-11-1) overall and (0-4-1) in Big Sky play, while Idaho State earned their first win improving to (1-12-1) on the year and (1-3) in conference play.
"We had chances to finish and we didn't," said SUU head coach Kai Edwards. "We created tons of quality chances and came back late, but the attention to detail was sloppy. Right now it's about us winning individual moments. There's no one in this conference we can't play with. If we play well we can play against every single team in this conference."
SUU got off to a quick start as their offensive attack immediately asserted its presence in the midfield and created multiple chances inside the Bengals' final third leading to eight shots in the first 20 minutes. The Thunderbirds got the scoring started in the 27th minute after earning a corner kick. Midfielder Kamryn Farro set up to take the set-piece and fired a high looping ball inside the box to Natalia Sepulveda who sent a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner of the net, giving the Thunderbirds the lead.
The Bengals scrambled to get back into the game and started to retain more time of possession, but the Thunderbirds continued to find open looks and fired three more shots at the Idaho State goalkeeper before the end of the half.
After a dominant start from the Thunderbirds, the Bengals came out of the break looking energized. Their offensive attack turned up the intensity and began making deep runs into the Thunderbirds 18-yard box. They found the tying goal in the 60th minute when defender Gabby Warta collected a pass outside the box and fired a low shot to the bottom right corner of the net giving the Bengals all of the momentum.
Idaho State's offensive attack continued to surge forward, finding the back of the net again in the 67th and 68th minutes, putting itself in the driver's seat.
Finding themselves down late, the Thunderbirds searched to find ways to get back into the game. They finally found their footing and broke through in the 84th minute when Kate Schirmer fired a pass into the box towards Forward Rachel Hunt. Hunt collected the pass and flicked a shot past the keeper into the bottom left corner of the net, cutting into the Bengals' lead.
The T-Birds continued to fight to find the equalizer, but could not find their way into the back of the net.
